Co-founder, Jasmine Oeinck, started making granolas to fuel her training sessions as a professional triathlete instead of eating the oily granolas available to her.
In 2009, Brandon was living in Austin, Texas and Jasmine in Boulder, Colorado where the two first met in a bike shop. The next year, Brandon had moved back to Boulder, where he had attended the University of Colorado, and Jasmine was sidelined from her triathlon career with illness.
Not one to sit still, Jasmine gave some of her granola to Brandon, telling him about her idea to try selling it. Several athletes visiting Boulder became hooked on Jasmine’s granola, which she started calling “Bulumu Granola”, an acronym referencing the email signature she used with her mom, “Buckle up. Love you. Miss you.”.
Impressed, Brandon began helping research how to start a business and together they gave samples to anyone who would take them. With the help of a few friends, Bulumu launched at the start of 2011 and landed its first major account at Whole Foods Market that spring while still printing labels on a home computer. Jasmine began racing triathlon again, putting her earnings toward the new business, while Brandon quit his job to focus on Bulumu.
Jasmine has now put her triathlon career on hold once again, to take a more involved role in the company and develop new products.
